TEMPORARY LODGING

The Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) helps cover lodging and meal expenses while you search for permanent housing, reimbursing a portion of your costs for up to 60 days.

Who’s Eligible? Eligible for TLA are Active Duty members reporting without family who cannot stay in BEQ/BOQ, as well as those reporting with family.

How to Apply:

●    Apply within 72 hours of arrival at your permanent duty station’s Housing Office.

●    TLA is initially authorized for 10 days, with renewals in 10-day increments up to 60 days.

●    Renewals require proof that you’re actively seeking housing.

Payment & Reimbursement:

●    TLA amounts vary by family size and lodging type.

●    Most hotels accept payment in 10-day increments when informed about TLA.

●    You may need to pay upfront with a government or personal credit card.

●    Keep hotel bills for reimbursement through your TLA office.

●    For daily meal and lodging rates, visit GSA Per Diem Rates

OFF-BASE HOUSING

Rent and utilities vary by location and size—some places may cost more than your BAH, but smaller, affordable options exist. Make sure your lease is military-friendly, allowing you to break it if PCS orders come.

Hawaii’s housing can be pricey, but your BAH and possible COLA usually cover rent or mortgage costs. Off-base living offers a different island experience while keeping base benefits.

TIPS FOR RENTING A HOME

Hawaii’s rental market is competitive with limited inventory. Here are key tips to help you secure a rental:

●    Arrive First: Many landlords want to meet in person and may prefer tenants with a local phone number.

●    Temporary Housing: Plan to stay in a hotel or on-base lodging if you can’t find a rental before arrival.

●    Check Listings Often: Use Craigslist, Facebook, and Zillow, but act fast—good rentals go quickly.

●    Watch for Scams: Compare prices, meet property managers in person, and never send money before signing a lease.

●    Leverage Your Network: Use on-base resources, friends, and coworkers to find leads.

●    Understand Local Norms: Rentals vary from condos to ohana housing; many homes are built to withstand Hawaii’s climate but may differ from mainland standards.

●    Pets: Few rentals allow pets, often requiring a deposit and extra effort.

●    Act Quickly & Read Lease Carefully: Be ready to apply and pay deposits promptly. Month-to-month leases require 28 days’ notice to vacate.

●    Document Condition: Take videos when moving in to protect your security deposit.

●    Budget for Utilities & Maintenance: Expect $300–$500 monthly for utilities; lawn care and some maintenance may be your responsibility.
