Education Resources & Support

Explore programs and resources designed to help military families and children with school transitions, enrollment, supplies, and educational support.

A+ PROGRAM

Out-Of-School-Time (OST) programs provide a safe venue for students between the end of the school day and the availability of their family and/or caregivers, and may extend to evenings, weekends, holidays and intersessions (including summer). Among these is the A+ Program. Available for children in kindergarten through grade six, A+ provides these students with time to complete homework, and participate in enrichment and physical activities such as arts, crafts, drama, dance, sports and games.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Since military families move approximately every 2 - 4 years, finding a quality school where you're stationed is critical for building a strong academic foundation for children thrust into constant change. The Hawaii DOE has programs in place that are specific to military families for making the educational transition easier. Click the “Enrollment” tab and “Military Families” link for details.

STUDENT TRANSITION CENTERS

Hawaii is the temporary or long-term home for some 100,000 military personnel, spouses and children. HIDOE Student Transition Centers offer a safe and stable foundation via peer-to-peer mentoring by student ambassadors to support incoming students as they acclimate to their new school community. Transition Centers are rooted at public schools with higher populations of military dependent students, such as Leilehua High, Mokapu Elementary and Radford High.

EDUCATION COMMISIONS AND INTERSHIPS

The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children (MIC3) is an agreement among all 50 states (plus D.C. and DoDEA schools) that helps ease school transitions for military kids when their families move. Find details on MIC3 and also the Joint Venture
